40 by 40 List: Part 1

At my 30th birthday, I recounted the successes and failures of my 30 by 30 list. But deep down, I lamented that I didn’t have a full 40 by 40 list ready to go. I’d created 30 by 30 when I was 27. I gave myself 3 years to complete 30 big tasks. And some of the “big ticket” items I hadn’t expected to achieve were oddly the first to be crossed off.

Many texts on completing goals say you need to write down your vision to see it through. I didn’t realize how true that was until I started tracking the 30 by 30 project.

But with 40 by 40, I was faced with a whole new dilemma. First, I am a much different person at 30 than I was at 20. So who knows who I will be in another full decade.

Second, the goals should be achievable within a decade, but they shouldn’t be so simple they’re all achievable within five years. There needs to be some stretch.

Those two items combined add a whole host of other difficulties. Who knows what my financial position will be? My relationship situation? Where will I be living? What will I be doing?

Creating the 40 by 40 list felt so much bigger and so much more complicated than the 30 by 30 list. And when I started out, I petered out around 15 items. Over time I was able to add, but not enough to get to 40 items.

Supportive friends and family assured me this was no problem. So, I’m posting half of a 40 by 40 list. Don’t worry. I’ve developed rules, the structure I so dearly love, that allow me to feel this isn’t cheating! I must develop another 20 items by 35. And while I have until 40 complete them, I probably should make significant progress in the next few years!

Without further grandstanding, here is my 20 by 40 list. Stay tuned to find out which ones I’ve managed to complete in the last 8 months.
